Storyteller Quest 8

Inspiration

What’s the most interesting thing you learned recently? How did you learn about that information? Is it a regular habit or do you often find out about interesting things that way? Does it make you happy? What motivates you to do the same thing again?

Knowledge

In quest’s 2-8 we focused on character. Next week we will look at elements of setting. Before we can do that you need to solidify the core motivations of your characters.

Motivation - What makes your character ‘do’ anything.

Examples of motivation:

  • Material Possession(s)

  • Safety

  • Survival

  • Power

  • Praise

  • Fame

  • Revenge

  • Fear

  • Love

  • Relationship(s)

  • Hunger

Challenge

Part 1. Brainstorm. By now you should know your main character quite well. Make a list of all of your characters and write what motivates them next to their name.

What did you learn? Do you have characters who would be interesting working together that you didn’t consider yet? Can a round character who is close to the protagonist be turned by the antagonist?

Part 2. Write a monologue from the perspective of any non-main character including their backstory and what their motivation is. Pick someone whose motivation is very different from your main characters.

Remember to use dialogue (quest 7) that fits the character but also make sure the reader knows what wakes this person up in the morning (quest 3 and 8.)

Send me a message if you’d like some feedback.

Encouragement

What motivates you to write? Is it passion? Curiosity? It’s your turn to encourage me. Tell me in the comments why you want to tell stories!
