Storyteller Quest 9

Inspiration

Where is a place that you dream about often? How does going there change you? Is it peaceful? Maddening?

If a place in your mind evokes a feeling. What places would evoke a feeling in your characters?

Knowledge

So far you’ve developed amazing characters. Now it’s time to build the world they live in.

Setting - Is world building. It’s physical, cultural, and spiritual. It is everything that influences and affects your character(s.)

Challenge

Part 1. Keep it simple for now. We’ll get into more setting as we go. For today imagine a world that will shape your protagonist. Are they modern? Is there something that exists that could make-or-break them?

For instance, are they a gambling addict? Then are they in Las Vegas or in a dry town that also doesn’t allow gambling?

What physical or cultural setting will give them grit or cause them to crack?

Part 2. Come up with a new and interesting setting that you tend to like to read about. Now go back and write a character into that new setting.

Was it easier for you to build a world for an existing character? Or do you prefer to build a world and discover the character in it?

Send me a message if you’d like some feedback.

Encouragement

Do you remember the first quest?

Some people are outline/discovery hybrids.

You may like to outline your worlds, but then discover your characters within those worlds. That’s great! There are many different ways to write stories. I will share the ones that have worked for others.

Matt Antis

An unexpected deployment with the Army in 2009 halted his scholastic achievement, but! He learned the bulk of business in the proverbial trench elbow to elbow with a team of professionals who he is forever grateful for.

When he’s not being a husband, dad, shooting his bow or training parkour, you can find him teaching Sunday school, advising parkour gyms, writing for inkjotkingdom.com and his wife’s children’s book website, whitneyantis.com.
